Course Date: December 15, 2008
Location: Mississauga, ON
Code: FE-INFO-002
Description
Engineers have an inherent role as creators and managers of new technology. Intellectual property – that is, patents, trade secrets, industrial designs, trade-marks and copyright- are basic proprietary rights that play an important role in the day-to-day work of professional engineers. As such, engineers should have an understanding of the different forms of IP and the underlying law that governs it.
This presentation will address the various forms of IP protection, what they do and do not cover, the benefits of obtaining registration and an overview of the application process, including timing and cost. It will also address issues that commonly arise with respect to ownership of IP, and will conclude with recommendations on how to commercialize and enforce IP rights. Throughout, reference will be made to case scenarios based on real-life situations. There will be a question-and-answer period at the end of the session.
This session will be of interest to all engineers, whether practising as independent consultants or as employees in corporations.
